Introducing Gail Lucas, our New Reference Coordinator

Gail Lucas, Reference Center Coordinator Gail Lucas was hired on July 11 as the reference center coordinator for SJVIS, a position left vacant after Sharon Vandercook retired earlier in the year. Gail is a native Californian with an M.L.S. from California State University, San Jose where she wrote her thesis on continuing education for librarians. She has 25 years of experience working in libraries, beginning with a job she held in a children’s room at the age of 16. Later, she worked as a librarian in the media center for the Butte County Superintendent of Schools and for the Butte Community College media services department. She also served as a librarian for the California State Department of Education where she developed and implemented three resource centers for educational improvement. For another six years Gail served as a corporate librarian for Lockheed Martin where she pioneered database development and started a software evaluation library. After this, she worked as a reference librarian and as head of technical services at the Academy of Arts College in San Francisco. Please help us welcome Gail to her new position as reference coordinator for SJVIS.

Introducing Richard Mann

In June of this year Richard Mann was offered a librarian position at SJVIS, prompting him to undertake a 10-day journey across the country from his native New York to a new home in California. Richard earned his M.L.S at State University of New York at Albany. He then worked at three libraries in Long Island, including Central ISLID Public Library, Bayshore Public Library, and West ISLIP Public Library. Before entering the library profession, Richard was a social worker and he taught High School English for five years. His interests include photography, writing, and reading his favorite authors. Gunter Grass, Graham Green, and Stephen King are just a few of the writers Richard enjoys. Join us in helping Richard feel at home in the state of California and the San Joaquin Valley.

Kathleen Smith Earns Her Black Belt in Library Science

Join us in congratulating Kathleen Smith for her completion of her Masters of Library and Information Science degree. Kathleen earned her degree from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. She was able to attend classes and continue her work with SJVIS at the same time by using the distance learning scheduling option at the University of Illinois known as LEEP. She was able to complete her degree in two years, attending graduation ceremonies in May and officially completing all of her degree requirements on August 5, 2002. Needless to say Kathleen's schedule has been very full with both school and work, and even though she has finished school, she shows no signs of slowing down.

SJVIS Staff Adjusting to New and Improved Office Design

After nearly a month of drilling, scraping and unceasing noise the SJVIS office space has now returned to something like normalcy. Reference center and Automation staff were pleased when their morning arrival at work was not greeted with the ringing blows of hammers. As for the transformed office space, staff members are still adjusting to the modern appearance and ergonomic features of their surroundings. Richard Mann took this picture of a passerby.
